Volunteers are needed on this project throughout the year, but activities and schools are subject to change during busy periods and during the school holidays from March to April and during October. As a volunteer on the Childcare Programme you will work in childcare centres with children between the ages of 2 to 6 years old from the local villages and surrounding hill tribes. This project is well suited to volunteers who have a passion for education and enjoy working with young children.
Your tasks can include running educational and learning activities, maintaining the classroom and helping with the children at mealtimes. Volunteers will run activities for approximately 90 minutes in a morning and then required to assist with resource development in the afternoon, prior to assisting with a class the next day. Tuesday and Thursdays - After lunch volunteers will help with childcare related activities, which may include such tasks as: gardening, agricultural project, resource development at the school.
Volunteers do not need to be qualified or experienced teachers to participate on this project.
The area around Chiang Rai is home to thousands of hilltribe people, with childcare centres in many of the hilltribe villages (mainly Akha, Lahu, and Karen). The childcare centres and kindergarten are located in local villages, or a single centre will serve a number of communities in the local area. These centres serve a vital role preparing the children for government schooling which is conducted in Thai language, not their native tongue.
Volunteers assist teachers by taking care of the children and conducting activities that will help development.

It is important to note that we rely largely on donations of resources for teaching. If volunteers can bring resources with them, or buy them locally, this is very helpful. If photocopies are wanted for teaching, we ask that volunteers pay for these copies themselves, as the fee paid does not cover extras such as this. It is also much more fun to make/draw/paint your own resources rather than photocopy them.

FAQs
Is the childcare placement available all year?
Yes, but there are certain periods when there is less, or no teaching at school. Effectively, all of April and October - all Childcare Centres are shut for holidays, so other placements will be organised during these periods.
There are also national holidays and regular teacher days, which means the Childcare Centres are shut or engaged in other activities, with the result that we cannot teach. During these periods we expect childcare volunteers to be flexible in their attitude, be proactive, and sometimes help on the indoor or outdoor programmes.
Can I join for just a week?
Yes, our childcare programme is more flexible than our Indoor teaching programme. However, we still recommend a minimum of 2-3 weeks to fully benefit from the programme - from your Monday arrival, and Tuesday orientation, you won't begin the work until Wednesday; and if you're only here for a week that means you get 3 days (Wed/Thu/Fri) in class.
As long as you complete the full programme (Monday-Saturday) you will receive a certificate which can be downloaded from our private website when logged in.
I have limited English, can I still teach?
Yes, childcare volunteers are required to run learning activities, songs, games and crafts with the children, so a low level of English is acceptable. However, the staff will assess this upon your arrival and may change your programme to outdoor.
Do 1 week volunteers get a certificate for volunteering?
Yes, if the programme is completed, and there are no problems.
Please click the link here for full details about the awarding of certificates.
Will I be teaching with other volunteers?
Sometimes, but this isn’t guaranteed. Certain periods of the year are more popular, so in the low season, the numbers of volunteers registered can drop, which could mean that you may be teaching alone, with intern students, or with staff.
What is a typical week like?
Example of a standard week for Childcare volunteers
Because of the age of the children, Childcare is a programme which leaves more spare time for the volunteer - after the volunteers have left (usually around 11.00, the children will spend some time calming down, then have lunch, and sleep in the afternoon for a couple of hours before going home.
Volunteers go to the childcare centre in the morning, and return for lunch. The first part of the afternoon is spent preparing for the following day's class, as well as a debrief of the morning's activities. Tuesday and Thursdays volunteers will also participate in childcare related activities based at the school, such as gardening, painting (metalwork preparation for painting), agricultural project or Thai or English resource development.
