1 Day Learning: Weaving

Duration: 1 day
From: The Mirror Foundation, Chiang Rai
The Pa Ka Yaw tribe (Karen) have a tradition of weaving on hand looms, using natural dyes to colour the material. Our programme enables you to not only learn about this craft, but also try your hand at weaving too. No trekking involved!

A number of ethnic minorities in the region have a tradition of weaving their own clothing. Our programme focuses on the Pa Ka Yaw tribe - this is a subtribe of the Karen tribe. Most of the Karen communities in northern Thailand, and along the Myanmar border are Pa Ka Yaw, fled to Thailand after a civil war began a year after the country (then called Burma) became independent in 1948.

No trekking involved!

Your Pa Ka Yaw guide will give your a tour of the community, explaining about the history and local culture. A short walk to view the extensive rice paddies surrounding the village, and understand the tough life endured by farmers. The craft workshop, hosted by ladies from the village, explains all aspects of traditional weaving - the loom, yarn, dyes, and what the significance of the different coloured clothing has - why, for instance, single girls wear white dresses, and married women wear red dresses. You will also be invited to enjoy a typical lunch before beginning the afternoon session.

Although we recommend a minimum of two people in a group - to reduce costs, but also so you have someone to share the experience with - we occasionally have requests from solo travellers who wish to book a tour. As our tours are private, the group would consist of the individual and our guide. We no longer offer to add a solo traveller to an existing group.
Solo travellers unfortunately have to pay a higher price as we have a number of set costs which we cannot reduce. This means that the per person fee is higher than the per person fee of a booking for 2 people.
